Lil Nas X was unhappy with the company Nike Monday when a judge issued a temporary restraining order banning any future sales of customized Nike sneakers called “Satan shoes”.
Nike filed a lawsuit blocking the sale and distribution against Brooklyn based design company MSCHF Product Studio after they released 666 pairs of specially designed Air Max 97 sneakers complete with pentagrams and human blood. The shoe release was tied to promoting rapper Lil Nas X’s new “Montero” video. Also a popular Twitter personality, Lil Nas X’s breakthrough song released in December of 2018 was “Old Town Road” which spent 19 weeks atop the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The sneakers, in which 665 sold out in less than a minute following Monday’s launch, were according to MSCHF: “not typical sneakers, but rather individually numbered works of art that were sold to collectors for $1,018 each.” The last pair was not sold online because it was to be held for a giveaway by the rapper, but Lil Nas X posted on his Twitter page on April Fool’s Day that he was no longer permitted to do even that.
You might recall that a few years ago the same company released a limited edition of “Jesus Shoes”, redesigning again – Air Max 97’s, but that time with a golden crucifix and sourced Holy Water from the River Jordan inside of it’s soles. A quick google search shows those shoes had at one point a reselling value of up to $4000 USD.
