During this current Covid-19 crisis that our country is going through, the President of the United States, along with many state governors have instituted social-distancing measures that have caused school systems and various types of companies to close their doors for a month or more. A lot of Americans have either been furloughed, laid off, or was blessed to have the opportunity to work from home – like me.
This is my first time working from home, and I have to say it’s been a challenge but gratefully I’m starting to get the hang of it now. Through trial and error I’ve realized some things that need to happen at home if I want to have the most creative and productive experiences. I’ve put together a list of tips for all of you on what I have learned so far…
Dedicate A Quiet Space
If anything is going to sabotage your productiveness at home, it’s going to be distractions. Find a quiet space in your home where you can focus on your work. Keep the minimum distractions around you. Cell phone usage should be for work-related contacts only during your work-time, just as if you were in the office. Let the others in your household know that you are on the clock, so interruptions are minimal as well.
Get Out Of Your Pajamas
As comfortable as they are, it might not be in your best interest to work in while in your pajamas. If your expected to join conference video calls during the week, you will want to look at the least, presentable and not as if you just rolled out of the bed.
Take Plenty of Breaks
When I say “plenty”, I don’t mean a break every 20 minutes or so. You should take enough breaks to keep your mind fresh and energized. Plus, because of the atmosphere of home, you may need or want to check on your kids, unload your dryer, let out the dogs or check on the mail. Take your breaks to clear your mind.
Music Is A Maybe
Some people like to work with music in the background and some do not. I’ve worked with both types of people. For myself, I enjoy wearing company headphones and listening to my own personal playlists as I work during the day. If this is you as well, then go for it! My opinion, I wouldn’t choose something too relaxing like elevator music (that could make you sleepy) OR too rowdy of a music selection, but something in between – a good balance. I personally like to listen to my favorite gospel music and it makes the day fly by even more.
Take A Lunch!
This should go without saying, but don’t skip that lunch! If you don’t, you just may burn yourself out.
So… what do you think of my tips? What would you add to this list that has helped you when working from home? I’d love to read your comments. I hope you all are staying safe and keeping that social-distancing in check! We all will get through this. And for those struggling or for those who have been directly effected by this crisis financially or health-wise, I AM PRAYING FOR YOU!
Stay safe, xo tj
